People in London are amongst the most likely to do more than 10 hours of unpaid overtime as a study revealed that workers "gave away" billions in overtime last year, a new study has revealed.
According to the TUC more than five million workers gave away £27.4 billion in unpaid overtime last year, averaging a record £5,400 per person.
Other regions where workers were likely to do more than 10 hours of unpaid overtime a week were Northern Ireland and the East Midlands.
Workers affected put in seven hours 12 minutes extra every week, worth £5,402 a year, the highest amount since records began in the late 1990s.
London was also one of the regions that saw the biggest increase in the value of unpaid overtime alongside the North West and the North East. Wales was the only area in which the value of unpaid overtime fell.
The number of people regularly working unpaid overtime fell by 168,000 last year, largely because of a cut in hours caused by the recession. Of the five million employees who worked unpaid overtime, nearly 900,000 regularly worked more than 10 hours a week for free.
