More workers being cheated out of wages, experts say

The owner of the small nursing home wanted out. Owner Kay Justice left a letter to employees saying the place would close in a week. Then she vanished. With her went Bonnie Lapinski's last paycheck and those of the 20 other employees at the Wellington Manor Nursing Home in Lorain County. "We were assured we'd get paid, but I haven't seen anything, and that was in August," said Lapinski, a licensed practical nurse. What happened to the Wellington Manor workers is commonly called wage theft: employees not getting paid for the work they perform. Some employers don't pay earned overtime. Some pay less than the minimum wage. Some require employees to keep working after forcing them to clock out. Experts say wage theft has increased during this economic downturn as owners have had difficulty making the payroll. (click on link to read full story)
