Wage theft meeting held in Wichita

Saturday, October 23, 2010

About fifty workers from Wichita gathered Saturday afternoon for a meeting about wage theft. It's a practice where employers will withhold wages for various reasons.  The Kansas Department of Labor says employers will do this by forcing its workers to work off the clock or misclassify them as something other than an employee.  The meeting is one of five that's being held across the country. Representatives from the Department of Labor were there to make sure everyone knew where to turn for help.

"Any employee can be taken advantage of," said Karen Chainkin of the Department of Labor. "Especially if they don't know their rights and that's one of the reasons that we're here today to make sure people have better access to us so we know what their issues are."  (click on link to read full story)
